What you may not know...

Your interpersonal skills may be sabotaging your interview efforts.  Candidates with great personal traits do MUCH better in an interview...and there's a reason for that!  Compatible candidates will "fit" better within the organization and hiring managers know they can train people to do most things, but they can't train compatibility.

Certainly, a lot of your success in a job interview is dependent on how well you answer questions, but interviewers are trained to find out what you know and check for compatibility (your ability to fit in). A problem arises for many interviewers: They don't know how to gauge compatibility.

YOU have to make it easy for the interviewer!

Typically, an interview goes like this: the company lists the competencies for the job, they conduct an interview, check references, then make a hiring decision based on a gut feeling. Yep, base a decision on how you feel about the candidate, not necessarily facts.

The Korn/Ferry International Executive Recruiter Index (Part IV) released in 2004, showed that  68.7% job applicants fabricated reasons for leaving prior jobs, 68.2% exaggerate results and accomplishments, and 45.2% enhanced previous job responsibilities.

SOME interviewers know they can't fully rely on information given by the candidate, so they'll rely on other information to make hiring decisions.

Behavioral questions help to gauge compatibility, but your personality and ability to fit in will make interviewers sit up straight and take a good look at you.

You can manage what the interviewer sees during the interview.

You've got to plug into the interviewer's desire to select an employee based on compatibility.  The best interview tips you can get will focus on YOUR BEHAVIORS during an interview, because they are what sets you apart from other applicants.

You don't see how you affect others, so you don't see the many mistakes you make in your social connections.

Do you quickly move your eyes away from someone else's eyes who you're meeting for the first time?

Do you begin to ramble in a panic, as you try to fill what you perceive as an awkward silence?
