Resume Tips

You should be brief and to the point.  Here are some guidelines to help you gauge the length of your resume.

One Page - Less than ten years of experience or change in careers

Two Pages - More than ten years in the same field
                - Technical resume, which includes certifications

Three Pages - Senior-level executive resumes

Control the number of pages.  If you are a little over, cut back to fit onto one less page.

Include Numbers

Using numbers, especially near the top will get your reviewer's attention. Show concrete evidence of your value to your previous organizations.  Quantify your successes. Here's an example:

Managed a team of realtors.  (Not very inspiring)

Managed 14 real estate agents, boosting overall sales by 40%. (Much better)

Use the words of the trade

While reviewing your resume, the personnel specialist will evaluate you based on what it contains.  Your resume may actually be qualified (first step to being accepted) by someone not well versed in what you do. Include buzzwords of your trade (but not too much). Most pre-qualifiers will be able to recognize these.  Review any job bulletins to help you focus on which words to use.

Read it, read it, take a break and read it again.

After you write your resume, go over it several times. Spelling or grammatical errors show a future employer that you are willing to send in sloppy work. Enlist a grammar-savvy friend who can find mistakes that you might not catch. You will be surprised at what someone else might find.

Consider a resume service provider for your resume development, interview coaching, and career assessment. If you can't say that your job search campaign is on solid ground, consider using a professional resume service.
